Chikungunya vs. Other Mosquito - Borne Illnesses: Difference and Ayurvedic Treatment

Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral illness transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. The symptoms of chikungunya include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, and rash. While these symptoms are similar to other mosquito-borne illnesses, there are differences in how they manifest.

Dengue fever and Zika virus are two other mosquito-borne illnesses that share some symptoms with chikungunya. Dengue fever can cause high fever, severe headache, joint pain, and rash. Zika virus can cause fever, joint pain, inflammation, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). However, unlike chikungunya, both dengue and Zika can cause severe birth defects if a pregnant woman contracts the virus.

Malaria is another mosquito-borne illness that can cause fever, headache, and joint pain, but a parasite and not a virus cause it. Malaria can also cause anaemia, jaundice, and organ failure if left untreated.

Generally, the best way to differentiate between these illnesses is to get a medical diagnosis based on laboratory tests and symptoms. It’s also important to prevent mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing.

Here are some Ayurvedic remedies that may be helpful:

  • Tulsi (Holy Basil): Tulsi is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce joint pain associated with Chikungunya. You can drink Tulsi tea or take Tulsi capsules.
  • Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia): Guduchi is an immune-modulator herb and can help boost your immune system. It can also help reduce fever and joint pain.
  • Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia): Giloy is another herb that can help boost your immune system and reduce fever.
  • Triphala: Triphala is a combination of three fruits – Amla, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki. It can help detoxify your body and improve digestion.
  • Coconut Water: Coconut water is rich in electrolytes and can help keep you hydrated. It can also help reduce fever.
